Pants That Empower: Aunty Chai Chee’s Story
Aunty Chai Chee is an independent spirit with a sharp sense of what she needs and how she wants to live.
She’s a single elderly woman living alone in a one-room HDB flat, with no family support. Yet despite the challenges, she moves through the world with resilience and determination. You’ll often find her selling tickets from her mobility device—her means to a modest living and her way of holding onto independence.
We were introduced to her by a social worker, the same kind-hearted volunteer who connected us with Mdm Tiah. Thanks to her continued commitment to helping others, we had the privilege of working with Aunty Chai Chee to create something designed specifically for her: a pair of pants that supports both her body and her life.
Getting to Know Aunty Chai Chee
Living with severe arthritis has significantly affected Aunty Chai Chee’s hand function. Her fingers are visibly twisted, making gripping and pulling fabric difficult. On top of that, her waist is much smaller than her hips, which makes standard clothing uncomfortable and ill-fitting.
She’s also on the move throughout the day—navigating her neighbourhood in a motorised wheelchair, selling tickets to support herself. That’s why deep, secure pockets were non-negotiable: losing a ticket isn’t just an inconvenience—it could mean lost income.
When we sat with her, she was clear and precise—this was not about charity. This was about designing something practical, respectful, and truly useful. Together, we got to work.
Thoughtful Design, Co-Created
At first glance, her pants might look like a regular pair—complete with belt loops, drawstrings, and pockets. But every detail serves a very specific purpose.
- Belt loops? For Aunty Chai Chee, they’re finger loops—placed just right for her to grip with her arthritic fingers, helping her pull her pants up and down independently.
- An adjustable waistband lets her set the fit based on what feels best that day.
- Drawstrings give her backup security when the elastic wears over time.
- Lightweight fabric ensures dressing is manageable and not tiring.
- Deep, secure pockets are essential to keep her tickets safe as she travels in her wheelchair.
- ¾ length means the hems stay clean and out of the way, even when seated or dressing.
This wasn't just about making pants. It was about recognising her independence and giving her tools to keep living life on her own terms.
Made Possible by Two Well-Wishers
This project came to life thanks to the generosity of 2 sponsors who chose to #BeTheDifference. Their support didn’t just fund the making of a garment—it empowered someone to move through her day with more comfort, security, and confidence.
The Heart of Our Work
We hope that each detail we thoughtfully co-designed with her has translated into greater ease, dignity, and comfort in her daily life. Her independence was never in question—what she needed was a design that matched her strength.
To the Social Worker: thank you for continuing to connect us with those who need support most.
To our Well Wishers: thank you for choosing to make a meaningful impact.
To Aunty Chai Chee: thank you for showing us what quiet strength looks like.
